There probably isn’t a makeup lover out there who hasn’t heard of Champagne Pop. I’m pretty sure most of them own at least one variety of the BECCA x Jaclyn Hill family, whether it be the original pressed version, poured, liquid, palette, or even all of them. Where does it end, right? And now, the hype around the BECCA highlighters is seriously tough to beat. Since its release, I have seen more and more people trying to outshine each other with their highlights! (I know I’ve tried.) It doesn’t even stop with BECCA. Makeup brands are now competing against one another to see who can create the most blindingly luminous highlighter to ever exist, and I honestly want to try them all. For now, one thing remains certain: out of all the highlighters in my (current) collection, the BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in Champagne Pop is unparalleled in creating the most dazzling glow to the skin.
The Sephora website describes Champagne Pop as a “soft white gold with pinky peach undertones”, and the product itself as a “creamy, luminizing powder” that highlights the features “with a high-shine finish”. It says that the Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed range “achieves a refined glow in any light” and is “enriched with ultrafine luminescent pearls that absorb, reflect, and refract light” that “amplify your natural radiance”. All the shades in the range, such as Moonstone and Opal, are able to adjust to and enhance different skin tones. It also says that it’s “perfect for intense highlighting” which seems to be its main purpose.
If you’ve ever swatched these highlighters, you know that they all really pack a punch. They’re intensely pigmented, so I like to use a light hand when applying it to the high points of my face. Wait, who am I kidding? I go to town with the highlighter! Depending on how dense your brush is, one layer is enough, but more is definitely better! That’s if you’re a #highlightonfleek type of person such as myself, or if you’re trying to channel your inner Jaclyn Hill.
I usually use a Real Techniques Setting Brush to apply it to the tops of my cheekbones for a more concentrated look. Sometimes, I even add MAC Fix+ to make it even more intense (yes, it’s possible!) Recently though, I’ve started using a duo fibre brush from MAC. It doesn’t apply as much product, so it allows me to layer the highlight more slowly. I’ve also taken to applying it almost everywhere on my face, but I try not to do it on areas where it could pick up on texture on the skin or emphasize larger pores. I rarely have that problem, but that’s just a fair warning.
The color itself is very complementary to my medium to tan skin. I have yellow undertones, so I find that the golden sheen that Champagne Pop gives is very flattering. When swatched, it stays true to the warm pale-peach with reflective white gold shimmer particles, but the champagne quality of it is more vivid when applied to the face. I know some people find that the shade doesn’t suit them even though it’s marketed as a shade that’s flattering across the board. If you feel the same way, I’m sure there’s a shade in the range that you’ll find more suitable for your coloring.
Granted that this has achieved holy grail status for many of us, there is one flaw to this product: the formulation. Although the texture of it is very soft and creamy, some may find that the product is a little too soft. I’ve heard complaints that it cracks easily (whether it be from shipping accidents or sheer clumsiness), so I would suggest handling it with caution. I’m fortunate enough that I haven’t had any problems with it; I usually fill my makeup bag to the brim so that it’s nice and protected. Knock on wood.
I know for some people, this highlighter (or highlighters in general) can be a bit intimidating, and Champagne Pop borders on obnoxiously reflective. I understand not everyone is into that, but that’s okay since this highlighter is not for the faint of heart. As far as I’m concerned though, I am absolutely smitten. It makes me feel like some kind of celestial being when I first apply it, and even after eight hours when my natural oils come through and make me even more glowy.
It’s no longer limited edition, so you can easily get your hands on it for $38 (or PHP 1, 943 on the Sephora PH website). I don’t know if I’m thankful or not that it’s now permanent. I’m half mad that I fell for the hype, panicked that I wouldn’t get one since it was sold out everywhere, and bought it for a higher price from a reseller. Then again, I’m glad that if I ever run out, I can actually repurchase it without any problems. Not that it’s likely I’ll ever run out, let’s be real. I haven’t even made a dent in it, and I’ve had it for almost a year! This is definitely going to last me forever.
With dreams of becoming a shining beacon of light comes the BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in Champagne Pop to answer all our highlighter prayers. Its creamy and dreamy formula paired with its out-of-this-world reflective quality allows for makeup lovers everywhere to glow like nothing else. It’s universally flattering, though I’m sure some people would protest against this statement. Whether you have pale or dark skin, this highlighter brings out your inner goddess – and isn’t that what everyone wants?
