As promised, today I’m going to do a roundup of all my favourite products of 2013. Some products were absolute no-brainers, but some were pretty difficult to decide as well since I liked so many products last year. I have winners for each category, but I will also be including ‘Honorable Mentions’ for those ‘nearly made the cut’ products. :)
Let the awarding ceremony begin! :)
1. Primer: Smashbox Photofinish Primer
The first primer I ever used was Smashbox, and I’ve always loved it because it’s amazing at making my makeup last all day long. The only problem is that it’s so pricey over here that I ended up buying the mini one. I’m surprised it lasted me about 3 months, even though I use it everyday, since I need just a pea size and it’s good for all over. My favourite primers are usually silicone-y, and I love that it just feels velvety and smooth on my skin, gets rid of any pores and makeup just glides over the top. They have loads of versions for different skin types/needs so you can go check those out if you like.
2. Foundation: Revlon Photoready BB Cream
*Honorable Mention: Revlon Nearly Naked, NARS Sheer Matte
I’ve always thought that the concept of BB creams and tinted moisturisers was silly because they never seemed to cover anything up. This year has been the year of ‘no makeup makeup’ for me though, and I’ve been opting for lighter bases because it just felt wrong to be piling a ton of makeup on for school. So, I purchased this BB cream and was converted.
I used my fingers to blend it in and it somehow blurred out and masked my imperfections. My mother even asked me why my skin looked good, and I knew it was because of this BB Cream. I love that it’s so light on the skin and it lasts a really long time. I do find that I need to powder it because it makes me shiny throughout the day.
3. Concealer: Makeup Forever Full Cover Concealer
(Along with YSL Touche Eclat for under the eyes)
I’ve been using it on and off throughout the year, but at the beginning, I didn’t get the hype because apparently, I was using it wrong. I still used it everyday and took it everywhere with me because I knew it was waterproof. Towards the end, I realised it was amazing and it really was full coverage. The trick is to pat it over the top, let it settle for a while and then blend it in. Voila! Your blemishes and dark circles will disappear! It’s cool how I’ve used this so much and I don’t think I’ve used half of it since I use the tiniest bit all over my face. I love that I can wear it on its own without any worries, and that I don’t have to think about it creasing or fading because it won’t. It’s also handy that it’s in a squeezy tube because it’s more sanitary.
4. Powder: MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural
I never thought that I would end up loving this powder so much. I used to hate it because it always made me look cake-y and dry, but somehow, I picked this up from my drawer and used it, then went wide-eyed. It’s so good! I prefer it to my other powders because it lasts all day and doesn’t make me look powdery at all. I believe my mistake was using a dense powder brush for it, when I should have been using a duo-fibre brush so that it would go on more lightly. I take this everywhere with me now, but I kinda wish it came with a mirror though.
(Sorry this is different to all the rest. I forgot to include a bronzer, so I reused an old photo)
5. Bronzer: Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel
I was obsessed with this towards the end of summer, but then around autumn, I realised that I much prefer blush. But, I thought I’d include it in this post just because I really do adore this bronzer. Again, I was always unsure about how I would use this product, but then I gave it a go one day and just like magic, I looked pretty damn good (if I may say so myself). It warms up the face so well and makes me look healthy and glowing. It doesn’t get orange on my skin which is good. It’s can be used to give you a slight contour as well an all over bronzed effect. Oh, and it smells amazing!
6. Blush: Dior Rosy Glow Blush
*Honorable Mention: MaxFactor Miracle Touch Creamy Blush in Soft Cardinal
I tend to switch up my blushes, but I can definitely say that this is my favourite blush from this year even though I’ve only been using it towards the end. I was skeptical about its ‘skin adapting technology’ because of the overly bright Barbie pink colour in the pan. Thank God it doesn’t actually turn out that colour and it adjusted to my skin into this lovely pinky rose (how original) colour. I feel that it makes me look so fresh and healthy, and it doesn’t look powdery in any way. It also lasts on my skin for a long time which is great. It’s expensive since it’s Dior after all, but I honestly think that it’s worth it since I sweep it over my cheeks once and I’m done.
I personally don’t think that highlighter is an essential unless it’s a special occasion. The tops of my cheeks get oily for some reason, and adding more products on there would just make me look like an oil slick, so I prefer my ‘natural glow’. If I were to choose my favourite highlighter though, it would definitely be The Balm’s Mary Loumanizer.
7. Eye Primer: NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base
This product is life changing for me. I thought UDPP was good, but this just beats it by a mile. I discovered its amazingness when I went on a night out, fell asleep on the couch, and woke up the next day with it looking the way it did when I walked out the door. It’s so light when you put it on and it’s easy to blend. I even blend it up to my eyebrows to make the shadow last even longer! I don’t know what magic they use, but longevity is just phenomenal and it makes my eye makeup look even more vibrant.
8. Brows: K-Palette Real Lasting Eyebrow Pen
*Honorable Mention: MAC Eyeshadow in Brun
My eyebrows are one of my favourite features because people always compliment me on how nicely groomed, shaped and filled-in they are. And, I’ve always noticed that whenever I get compliments on them, I always happen to have this on that day. It’s an felt tip eyebrow pen, similar to the Gosh Eyebrow Pen. You can draw the little hairs onto your brows and it makes it look as natural as possible because it can look inked on when you use too much. I would suggest using this for when you want a more natural brow. And, it’s also waterproof and I can count on it to keep my eyebrows perfect all day.
Like my blush, I tend to mix it up and I don’t think I can choose my standout or most used eyeshadow just because I don’t have one, and I don’t wear it everyday anyway. But, I will say that the products I used most on my eyes are from the Naked 2 Palette, Wet’n’Wild Comfort Zone Palette, as well as the L’oreal Infallible Eyeshadows. My favourite eye makeup look has been the “Pin Up Girl” makeup look.
9. Eyeliner – NARS Larger than Life Eyeliners
I used to think that my Urban Decay 24/7 Liners or Makeup Forever Aqua Eyes Liners were good, but these just hit it out of the park for me. I’ve never loved an eyeliner so much that I bought it in other colours. First off, it’s a twist up which makes it easier since I don’t have to sharpen it all the time. Second, it’s so creamy and pigmented which is why it’s so easy to apply on my waterline. And third, it is crazy long lasting! I don’t have to worry about smudging, transferring or fading throughout the day at all. I’d say these are worth the money, but I’m sure I can find a dupe for this somewhere. :)
10. Mascara: Dior Lash Plumping Serum
Okay, so this isn’t technically a mascara, but to be honest, I’ve used so many mascaras this year that I don’t even remember them since I pretty much liked them all. But, I will say that this product is the reason behind my mascara’s extra ‘wow’ factor. It’s an eyelash primer so it turns my eyelashes white and then coats my lashes with fibres. When I put my mascara over the top, it just makes the length and volume double—no, triple!—in size and makes them look like false eyelashes. It also makes my mascara waterproof, so it lasts longer without smudging or transferring.
11. Lip Balm: Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector
I’ve always been a fan of colouring my lips in completely, but I made an exception for this guy right here. Although I do love my Carmex as my ultimate lip balm, this is just amazing for when you’re out and about and you don’t feel like wearing anything on your lips or when you just want to add a little shine over the top of lipsticks. This has the most buttery gloss texture, and when you rub your lips together, it’s like… it’s like… making love. (…don’t ask) It just feels, smells and looks so amazing. It really does perfect your lips somehow and leaves them moisturised and wonderful.
12. Lipstick: Revlon Lip Butter in Pink Truffle
*Honorable Mentions: NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams; Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains
This product is honestly my most used lip product… ever. I’ve never finished a tube of lipstick in my life, and this might just be the first. This is great because it has the pigmentation of a lipstick and the moisturising properties of a lip balm. It’s crazy how much I love this, and it now lives in my bag so I can take it with me everywhere. It’s my most perfect lip product because it matches and enhances my natural lip colour. I have the other shades from this range, but this is just the standout product for me.
MAC Fix +
Too Cool for School Marshmallow Puff
OPI Rapid Dry Top Coat
And those are my top favourites from the year 2013! I hope you liked what you saw. Tell me if you and I have the same favourites, or if you have different ones, tell me anyway because I would love to hear about it. :)
My December Favourites will be a joint post with my January Favourites post since I wasn’t able to talk about them in this post.
