Monthly Favorites: August 2013

Hello, darlings!

I’m sorry this is a bit late but I had problems with my laptop so I couldn’t post much right away. But anyway, here we go!

1. MAC Blush in Fleur Power

I know I was into a bronzey glow during the first part of the month, but towards the end, I for some reason enjoyed looking all pinky and flushed. To achieve this look, I kept going back to only one blush. It’s a matte pink shade, and gives the most perfect “innocent school girl blush”. I wish the texture were more velvety, but it’s fine. This was featured in my recent MAC Haul, if you want to see the other things I picked up from there as well. :)

2. Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer

Every girl, their mother and their mother’s dog has this concealer, and for good reason! Collection is finally in the Philippines, so the minute I found out, I practically flew to the stall. :D The thing I like best is that it’s long wearing, even on my blemishes. The problem I have with most concealers is that they fade, and I haven’t even walked out the door yet. It’s good coverage, is creamy, blends easily bladibladibla… I’m thankful it doesn’t go cakey on me as well.

3. L’oreal False Lash Telescopic Mascara

I originally wanted the waterproof version since I do have oily eyelids, but I was surprised when it didn’t smudge as bad as I expected. There was only slight smudging, but as usual, as long as I prime my lashes beforehand, I’m fine. It’s volumizing, not the most lengthening, but it works well enough (but I expected more from the fibers, but it’s not much help) and although I’m used to more wet mascaras, this isn’t too bad. One coat is actually enough to make your eyelashes look fabulous, but for an extra oomph, two coats works! I don’t think this is my most favorite mascara ever, but I’ve been enjoying it recently. :)

4. Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Crush Beguin

You guys know how I’m a big fan of these balm stains, and since I’ve been transitioning from summer to autumn, I’ve been going for a more berry lip. This pretty much finishes off my English Rose look, and I can build it up from pink to a deep berry color. It’s moisturizing and minty too! Check out my English Rose look to see what it looks like in action.

5. Too Cool for School Marshmallow Puff

I’ve been looking for dupes of the Beauty Blender over here, and when I finally found one, I was so happy to get it for much less! It probably isn’t as good as the original, but since I don’t know what it’s like, I’m pretty impressed with how this has been working! With regular sponges, it’s best to use them slightly damp, so the same goes for this thing. I just bounce the sponge on my face to blend the foundation in and I’m always satisfied its flawlessness. With brushes, I find that it sits on top of my skin and may look unnatural some of the time although coverage is good, but with this sponge, it’s like I put nothing on my face. Or at least, it seems like it. I also use the tip to blend concealer under my eyes. I’m waiting to try it with cream blushes though.

6. Organix Moroccan Argan Oil (Extra Penetrating)

This is my favorite discovery of the month. I tried their other hair oils before, but I decided to go for this one since it said “Extra Penetrating; for dry and coarse hair” which is what I have. The first time I tried it, I was blown away. My hair had never felt so soft in my life! I didn’t read the instructions, but what I did was to squeeze a pea sized amount on my palms, rub my hands together then work it into the ends of my hair, and whatever was left, I’d smooth it onto the top parts of my hair. I was surprised to find out that that was actually what you’re meant to do. :P It’s not much of a downside, but if I use too much, I found it to weigh my hair down slightly, so be careful. Or, you could go for the other formulas they have for normal hair and fine hair. Check out the other stuff they have in the brand as well; it’s organic (so I’ve heard) and the products I’ve tried so far have been really great! :)

And those are my favorite products and recent discoveries for the month of August! I hope you guys enjoyed. What have you been loving recently? Have you tried some of these products? Oh, and stay tuned for a drugstore haul coming soon! :)

With love,

Julia

I wanna try that organix hair thing! Have you tried their shampoos? I’m eyeing those too!

    Lovely photos, btw :)

    1. theunicahija says:

I’ve been putting off the shampoos since I still have a lot, but I heard they’re awesome! :D Yeah, choose the one that’s right for your hair to be safe. :) And thank you! Heehee <3

Nice! I’m looking for a new mascara. I have naturally long eyelashes and want to show them off the highest tip. However, the mascaras I’m using don’t seem to show the very tips of my lashes. I need a voluminous mascara. Is the L’Oreal telescopic a good idea? If not, any suggestions? :)

    1. theunicahija says:

Wow, you’re lucky! I’d say go for one of the Maybelline The Falsies (there are so many, but maybe not the original one though), or MaxFactor False Lash Effect, or L’oreal Volume Million Lashes, but Telescopic is amazing, too! If I confused you with a lot of suggestions, sorry! Hehe. :D Hope this helps. :)

      1. leaveli77 says:

        Ok thanks! That was helpful:)

        1. theunicahija says:

Glad I could help! Tell me which one you went with and how you get on. Good luck! :)

So I went with L’Oreal Voluminous False lashes. It does make my eyelashes look long and very thick, but it’s quite clumpy and a bit messy to put on. I just tested Maybelline’s Illegal Length mascara and I really like it. I may go for that next. Thanks for the suggestions!

            1. theunicahija says:

Is that new? I don’t think I’ve come across that one. I’ve seen Illegal Length; maybe I should go try that one out as well! Sure thing. ;)

              1. leaveli77 says:

It’s been around for about a year. It’s the “updated” version of Voluminous Million Lashes. (Gold shiny tube)

                1. theunicahija says:

Oh, I see! I love that one. Hm, I’ll go check next time. Thank you! :D

  3. That blush looks really nice. We don’t have Collections concealers here, but I recently picked one up from Kiko and it does the same thing you’ve described in your post. I guess they use a similar formula. I’m loving argan oil on the tips of my hair as well, and like you I’ve also noticed that putting a bit too much on leads to flat hair, not great. Lovely favorites ;)

    1. theunicahija says:

It definitely is! :) Ah, now *we* don’t have Kiko over here; I wish we did! It’s quickly becoming really popular! Yeah, Argan oil is working pretty great since my hair is so dry. I’m hoping to try the original Moroccan oil when I run out of this one though. Thank you so much! <3

That argan oil sounds really nice :) And I’ve added that L’Oreal mascara to my think-about-getting list – I like a very volumising mascara!

    1. theunicahija says:

It is! Plus I think it’s less expensive than the original. :D I wouldn’t say it’s the most volumizing one, but it works pretty well for me so I hope it does with you! :)

  5. Elise G says:

I REALLY need to check out that MAC blush; hopefully it’s in stock at my local MAC counter. I have a perfect almost-matte MAC pink from years ago that is mostly empty pan now!

    1. theunicahija says:

Yeah, you should! :D Which one is it, or is it limited edition? :)

      1. Elise G says:

It was a limited edition, waaaayyyy back when they had the Beauty Powder range. But this one looks like a perfect match!

        1. theunicahija says:

Oh, lucky you got on with the Beauty Powders. I’ve read loads of reviews that they’re not worth it, but hopefully this’ll work out for you! Good luck! :)

  6. Silvia Flores says:

i am in love with the blush as well! i believe it leaves a more natural looking finish with the foundation. great post!

    1. theunicahija says:

Yay, more people who know about this blush. :D Yeah, exactly. I like to blend out the edges with left over foundation from the sponge. :D

  7. Hey Julia! Nice mix, good to see you are trying the Organix hair oil! I’m intrigued by the blender/sponge…wish list, on it goes x

    1. theunicahija says:

Hey, thank you! Yeah, have you been trying it out as well? :D Yeah, any pink sponge will do I think. :P Happy hunting! :D

  8. Great post, thanks! I’m also in love with argan oil, it’s sooo good for hair. I’m currently using argan oil by pro naturals, it’s one of the few that’s silicone free, which my hair loves.

    1. theunicahija says:

Oh, wow, thanks! :D And yeah, it is! I don’t think I’ve come across that brand before, but I hope I do soon! Thank you for the recommendation as well! :)

  9. Ooo I love Moroccan oil, and that marshmallow puff haha looks fun. I usually use a shine spray, those are nice for just a little mid-day touch up.

Shine spray sounds nice! I have one, but I’m not sure if it’s that effective. What do you use? :)

      1. I like Creme of Nature Argan Oil. It comes in a nice tall brown can. When my curls look dull or if I didn’t put enough oil in and I already styled my hair is usually when I use mine.
